Chapter 14: The Cellar
I did not call Niall, and I did not call Kieran.
I spent the rest of that morning in my mother's kitchen with a pad of paper and a cold cup of her old Lyons tea, and I wrote down everything I knew about a custom I had been married into for nine days.
By noon I had a plan.
By midnight I had a voice memo app open on my phone and a rubber band holding it flat against my ribs, under my sweater.
At five-thirty in the morning I took a cab to Milton.
Seamus's white house was lit up.
He met me at the front door in his green cardigan, and he looked as pleased as a man who has watched the horse he bet on come in.
"Alone," he said. "Good girl."
"Where's my father?"
"Warm and well. After."
The three captains stood in the hall in their dark coats.
The oldest one had his hat in his hands.
The one with the missing fingers wouldn't look at me.
"I'll sign," I said.
Seamus's whole face loosened.
"But I'll do it right," I said. "I won't be a wife who hands a man her cut in a back hall at dawn like a woman paying a bookie. If I'm signing to you, I want the old words."
