Chapter 14: Cost
The boardroom on the fortieth floor was dark except for the city in the glass.
I walked in at midnight with my file bag and my mother's yellow statement folded in my pocket.
Jonas was already there.
He stood at the head of the long table in his shirtsleeves.
A single document lay squared in front of him, with a pen beside it.
The table could seat twenty-two.
I counted the chairs because I did not want to look at him yet.
"Sit," he said.
"I'll stand."
"Then read."
I crossed the carpet and picked up the page.
The heading said, Irrevocable Proxy.
I read it twice.
It gave me the vote on every share Jonas Thackeray owned, on every question.
It held until the minute the trust passed on December 12th.
It could not be revoked by him.
It could not be overridden by the board.
It named me, Hannah Drexler, as the holder.
"This is forty-one percent of the company," I said.
"Forty-one point two."
"If I walk into that boardroom and vote with your uncle, you lose everything."
