Chapter 7: Gala Dress

I stood up from the round table and walked around to the notary.

"Sir," I said pleasantly. "What color was the envelope?"

He blinked.

"Brown."

"Thick or thin?"

"Thick."

"Which hand did the driver hold it in?"

"His left. Or his right."

"The ceremony was in a hallway outside Room 204," I said. "There is no notary desk on that floor. Where did you stand?"

His eyes slid to Delaney.

"By the window," he said.

"There is no window in that hallway."

A director near the end of the table put down her fork.

"I may be mistaken on the details," the notary said. "It was a long time ago."

"Then it's strange you remember the cash so clearly," I said.

I turned to the room.

"Mr. Thackeray's driver has worked for him twelve years. He's in the garage. Ask him whether he ever carried an envelope into that building."

Leland spoke smoothly.

"We can sort the details at the hearing."

"We can," I said. "And I'll be asking for this gentleman's notary commission."

He put his gold pen in his pocket.

"Let us adjourn," he said, "and continue at the Foundation gala tonight. I am sure my nephew will bring his wife."

He said wife.

In the elevator my phone buzzed.

It was Marcy, whispering from a hallway at the courthouse.

"I looked up your notary," she said.
