Chapter 19: His Father's Name
"Tell him I'm not at home," Corin said into the phone, and then he sat very still on the edge of the quilt.
"He'll stay out there," I said.
"I know."
"He'll stand there until somebody photographs him standing there."
"I know that too."
He got up and pulled on yesterday's trousers.
I put on his hoodie and followed him down through the pale house.
It was ten past six, and the sky over the canyon was the color of dishwater.
The iron gate stood shut at the bottom of the drive, with the guard hovering beside it.
On the other side of the bars stood a man in a faded windbreaker and a feed-store cap from Duluth.
He was sixty, maybe, and thin as a coat hanger, with a cough that came up from the bottom of his chest.
He had Corin's jaw, and nothing else.
"Corin," he said.
Corin stopped six feet from the bars.
"Dad."
I had not heard him say the word before.
It sounded like something heavy being set down on a table.
"You got big," the man said, and laughed at his own joke, and it turned into the cough.
