Chapter 21: Hands
"Pier," Corin said on Thursday night, from the doorway of the guest room, with his coat on. "Now."
"It's nine o'clock the night before your premiere."
"I'm aware."
"There'll be a hundred photographers."
"There'll be about forty," he said. "I saw the cars on the way up from the gate."
I put down my pencil.
"You hate the pier."
"I've never been on the pier. I've been past the pier."
"Corin."
"I never got on the wheel," he said. "I'd like to get on it with you."
We got there at nine-thirty.
The pier was lit up in strings of colored bulbs, and the big wheel turned slowly over black water.
He parked in the open lot under a streetlamp, in full view, and got out and came around and opened my door.
Somebody shouted "That's him!" and somebody else shouted "That's her!"
Phones came up in a ragged ring.
Corin took my hand.
It wasn't a gesture, and it wasn't for anyone.
He laced his big fingers through mine and held on.
"You're gripping," I said.
"I know."
"You're gripping very hard."
