Nobody in Second Shot breathed.

The florist had a dahlia halfway into a jar.

The boy with the ponytail was holding the coffee pot over nothing.

"I have terms," I said.

Jody dropped her broom.

"Oh my god. She's negotiating. She's negotiating with the god of death in a laundromat."

"Former laundromat," said the woman I trained, from the desk.

Hades didn't look away from me.

"Go on," he said.

"I have a shop."

I put my hand flat on the folding counter.

"I signed a lease. Two years. I have a brother in a walk-up with a broken radiator."

"I know."

"I'm not moving under a river and coming up twice a year for Thanksgiving."

"I didn't ask you to."

"And I can't eat down there. Not unless I stay. You told me that the first night."

"I did."

"So what are you offering? A wife who lives on protein bars at your table?"

The mom in the window laughed out loud, then covered it with her clipboard.

Hades took a breath.

"The dead come every night," he said. "Somebody has to be on the dock. I can come up. I can't stay up."
