Chapter 29: The Wedding

Hades looked at the pot of lamb.

Then at the ferryman, holding his hat.

"He's been cooking for a table of forty with nobody at it for a hundred years," he said to me. "It's your wedding. You answer."

I looked at the ferryman.

His beard was trembling a little.

"I want the potatoes," I said. "Exactly like those. And I want to eat them."

The ferryman put his hat back on.

"Obviously," he said, and walked out into the snow.

We got married on the last Saturday in April, in the orchard below.

The trees were in flower.

I hadn't known pomegranates flowered.

The blossoms were red and waxy, like little bells, and the blue lamps in the branches made them glow.

Jody got ordained online.

She took it very seriously. She bought a robe. She practiced on the cats.

"By the power vested in me by a website," she said at the rehearsal, "and possibly the underworld..."

"Jody."

"I'm getting it right, Clary. Let me get it right."

The dress was red.

Not white. Never white again.

The florist found it, in a bridal shop on Arthur Avenue, in the back, on the sale rack.
