Chapter 13: The Roof
Nanami woke before dawn with her hand on Dravan's chest and the anger already back.
It had waited all night outside the door.
She slid out from under his arm without waking him.
She put on her blouse and skirt, found her glasses on the shelf, and climbed the tower stair to the roof.
The roof was flat black stone, white with frost, with a low wall around it.
Far below, one thin line of smoke rose from a grey slate roof in a hollow of the ridge.
She sat against the chimney stack and glared at it.
"She did not even ask," she said to the smoke, in Japanese. "She just lit a lamp and waited for whatever came."
The sky went from black to grey.
Boots sounded on the stair, slow and careful, and Dravan came through the hatch with two cups.
He looked at her, and then at the wall, and then sat down on the frosty stone two feet away from her.
He held out a cup and she took it.
The tea was terrible, and she drank all of it.
"I'll stay over here," he said. "Tell me if you want me to go downstairs."
