Chapter 17: Eight Thrones
The Thrones arrived at the gate at dawn in eight black carriages, and not one of them said good morning.
They climbed out one at a time in the cold courtyard, wrapped in furs.
The staff stood in two lines on the cobbles with their caps in their hands.
Nanami counted the Thrones as they passed.
There was a heavy man in a gold collar, a tall woman with antlers, and a pair of twins who finished each other's sentences.
There was a thin man who coughed, a young one who looked bored, and two others in grey.
The last one climbed down slowly, leaning on a cane, and she was the smallest of them all.
She was very old, with white hair under a black cap and a face like a folded letter.
"Eight," said Gorund, in a rough whisper. "The ninth chair has been empty since spring."
The great hall had been scrubbed overnight by every pair of hands in the castle.
