Chapter 18: The Night Before
At midnight the kitchen was the only warm room in the castle.
The cook had banked the big hearth, and the long scrubbed table gleamed in the red light.
Nanami sat on the end of it, swinging her feet, with a bowl of salve and a roll of clean linen beside her.
Dravan came in from the dark passage and stopped when he saw her.
"You said to come at midnight," he said.
"I said to bring your hand."
He held it out.
The bandage had gone brown and stiff, and she cut it away with the little paper knife.
Under it the skin was healing in tight pink ridges from his wrist to his fingertips.
She spread the salve on with two fingers, slowly, and he watched her do it.
"Sit," she said.
"There's a stool."
"Kneel, then."
He knelt on the flagstones between her knees without another word.
The firelight ran along his cheekbone and caught in the curl of his hair.
She turned the burned hand over and wound the fresh linen around it.
He kept very still, and she felt a shiver go through the arm.
"What do you want tomorrow?" he asked, low. "After. If it goes the way we think."
