Chapter 19: The Hearing
The great hall was so full that people stood in the doors and on the stairs.
Eight Thrones sat in their tall chairs, the ninth empty beside them, and Seleth stood at his lectern with his chain on.
Nanami stood at the long table with the vault book in her arms and the counting frame hooked on her belt.
"Page forty," she said, and her voice carried to the back.
She turned the book so the Thrones could see the slip of cream paper tucked in the gutter.
"The Collector says this line proves the king robbed his vault."
"It proves who the nine thousand bought, and that is me."
A murmur went round.
"Someone with a human hand pressed this wax," she said. "Here, at the edge. Look."
She passed the slip along the half circle.
The heavy Throne held it up to the candle.
The twins looked at it together, and the antlered woman lifted a small lens from her sleeve.
"A thumb," said the woman. "Whorls, and a scar."
