Chapter 20: The Night Before
Mari's POV
"Seven," I said.
My voice cracked on it.
The egg went on humming inside me, low and steady, where he had put it an hour ago.
The red nylon was wound twice around my wrists and the iron rail above my head.
The little brass key lay in my fist.
Royce knelt between my knees in his open shirt and his jeans, with the black remote in one hand.
He looked at me for a long time, in no hurry at all.
"Seven times," he said. "You're very good."
"You stopped again," I said.
"I did."
"You're a bastard."
"Count," he said.
It was the night of the twenty-sixth, the last night before the memorial, and he had not let me come once.
He had put me on my back at nine o'clock and tied me with my own lanyard.
"Count each time I stop you," he had said. "Out loud. You tell me when you've had enough."
I had not said it yet.
I was not going to.
He lowered his head and put his mouth on the inside of my thigh.
His tongue traced a slow wet line toward the center of me.
It stopped an inch away and went back down the other leg.
I whimpered.
He turned the egg up one notch with his thumb.
The hum climbed, and the pleasure climbed with it, hot and tight and low in my belly.
My hips came off the bed.
"Please," I said.
"That isn't the count."
"Royce."
"Count, Mari," he said.
His mouth closed over my clit.
He sucked it slowly and flicked the tip of his tongue back and forth.
The egg buzzed against the place inside me that I could not hide from.
I was so close that my toes curled and my breath stopped.
"Eight," I said, because I could feel it coming.
He lifted his mouth and turned the egg down to nothing.
I cried out, furious, and the nylon creaked on the rail.
"Eight," I sobbed.
"Good girl," he said.
