Chapter 23: The Hearing
At ten to nine on the twenty-ninth of January, I fixed his collar in the corridor outside Courtroom Four.
It did not need fixing.
I stood in front of him in the black dress my mother had hemmed again.
I slid my fingers inside the back of his collar and laid my palm flat on his neck.
He closed his eyes.
His skin was warm there, and his pulse beat under my hand.
"You're shaking," I said.
"I'm not."
"You are."
"Then hold on," Royce said, very low.
I held on.
I kept my palm on his neck until the clerk opened the door.
Behind me, my mother cleared her throat, which meant not in front of the federal government.
The room was full.
My mother sat on my left in the front row with the four photographs in her lap.
Teo sat on my right in a brown suit, with his hard hat on his knee.
Behind us sat the three other families.
Three hundred men from the night and day crews had taken the morning off, and they filled the benches to the back.
