Chapter 5: The Door I Hung
On Friday night I drove back to the clubhouse with a cordless drill and my tool trailer hitched to the truck.
I had no plan to speak to anyone.
I wanted my property out of that building before a woman I had never wronged spilled beer on it.
The yard was full of bikes.
Music thumped through the walls, and a prospect at the gate recognized me and stood up too fast.
"Mrs. Kilgore."
"Open it, please."
"I'm supposed to ask Rusty."
"Ask him then. I'll be loading my saws while you do."
I drove through when he lifted the bar, because he was twenty years old and I was not going to make him choose.
Inside, the whole room turned.
I had built that bar.
I had laid the floor, hung the front doors and run the wire for the jukebox, and I had never once been thanked for it.
Boone sat at the far table with a bottle in front of him and four men around him.
He saw me and put the bottle down.
Tawny stood behind him in a tank top and cut-offs, one hand on his shoulder.
I nodded to the room.
"Evening. I'm here for my tools."
"Ro," Rusty said, coming out of the crowd with his arms open. "Sit down. Let me get you a drink. You didn't need to do this tonight."
"My table saw is in your storage room."
"We'll bring it by in the morning."
"I'll take it now."
"Be reasonable, Ro."
"I am being reasonable. I'm paying for the gas."
A couple of the brothers laughed and covered it with their drinks.
