Chapter 6: Am I Even Yours

Faye drove us to Boone's garage on Monday afternoon, and she did not ask me if I wanted to come.

"Stay in the truck if you want," she said.

"I'm coming in."

"Then don't say anything, Mom. This one's mine."

The garage sat behind the clubhouse, a long steel shed with the big door rolled up.

Boone lay on a creeper under a bike with only his boots showing.

Faye stopped over them with her arms folded and her father's jaw set exactly like his.

"Dad."

The boots went still.

He rolled out slowly and sat up with a wrench in his hand.

"Kid," he said. "Your mother send you?"

"Nobody sent me."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want you to look at me."

He looked, for about a second and a half, and then he picked up a rag.

I stood in the doorway with my hand on the frame.

I had watched this exact scene a hundred times at the dinner table.

I had never once watched my daughter fight back.

"You call me kid," Faye said. "You've called me kid my whole life."

"It's a name."

"It's what you call a stranger's child at a barbecue."

He wiped his hands on the rag, and he didn't answer.

"I came to ask you something," she said. "When I was six I asked you for a ride on your bike, and you said no."

"You were too small."

"When I was sixteen I asked again. You said no."
