Chapter 7: What Rusty Saw
Boone's POV
I woke up in a hospital bed with my left shoulder wrapped and a nurse saying my name.
"Mr. Kilgore, you hit the guardrail at seventy. You broke your collarbone and three ribs. Do you know how much you drank?"
"Enough."
"Is there someone we can call?"
I didn't answer for a second.
"My wife," I said.
I said it before I thought.
She wrote it down.
The room smelled like bleach.
I lay there and listened to the machine beep and thought about my daughter holding up a swab kit in my garage.
I want to know if I'm even yours.
I had wanted to tell her yes.
I had wanted to say it so badly.
But I did not know if it was true.
For twenty-two years I had made myself believe it wasn't.
The door swung open, and Rusty came in.
He had on his good leather jacket and his worried face.
Tawny came in behind him in a short dress, with her purse clutched in both hands.
"Oh, Boone," she said, and started crying before she reached the bed.
"Stop," I said.
"You could have died!"
"I didn't."
She took my good hand anyway.
I let her hold it for about two seconds, and then I pulled it back.
"Give us a minute, Tawny."
She looked at Rusty, and Rusty nodded.
"Go get yourself a coffee, sweetheart. He's fine."
