Chapter 23: Not for Sale
"No," I said.
"I wasn't asking, sugar."
"I know. I'm still saying no."
Peg held the envelope against her chest with the hand that didn't have a tube in it.
"It's my name on the deed."
"It's my name on the program."
"Your program doesn't owe the county a hundred and eighty thousand dollars." Her monitor beeped faster. "Mine does."
Beau shifted at the foot of the bed.
"Peg," he said gently. "Maybe tomorrow."
"Tomorrow I might be dead, Coach. Today I'm making decisions."
"You're not dead," I said. "You're mean. Dead people aren't this mean."
"Watch me."
A nurse put her head in the door, looked at the monitor, looked at us, and said, "Five more minutes, and then she sleeps."
The door swung shut.
Peg turned her face to the window.
"I watched you carry that boy for five years," she said. "I'm not watching you carry me for the next twenty."
"You're not a thing I carry."
"I'm a seventy-four-year-old woman with a rink that leaks, and my heart just quit in front of ninety kids." Her voice wobbled. "Let me do one smart thing."
