Chapter 12: Mrs. Kester Goes to the Gala
Garson Hartigan called me that evening while I was folding laundry at my aunt's.
I did not have his number saved, and I almost let it ring.
"Beth? It's Garson. From the hotel."
"I know who it is."
"I'm sorry to call at night." His voice was level. "I wouldn't, but this is about your name."
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Go on."
"We have a booking this Saturday in the Lakeside Ballroom. A firm's twenty-fifth anniversary. Two hundred guests."
"Harbor Wealth."
"Yes. The planner is Ames Events."
I shut my eyes.
"The deposit was paid from the same joint card as the wedding," Garson said. "I can't tell you more about the contract than you're entitled to. But you're an account holder, and I thought you should hear it from me."
"They used it again."
"Yes."
"Can you cancel it?"
"I can." He paused. "Do you want me to?"
I thought about that.
I thought about two hundred people, a stage and a microphone.
"No," I said. "Leave it exactly as it is."
"All right."
"That's it? You don't want to know why?"
"I assumed you had one."
I laughed, a short, surprised laugh.
"There's one more thing," Garson said. "The seating list came in this afternoon. Mrs. Cory Kester is at table one."
"Table one."
"Next to the stage."
"With her husband."
"Yes."
"Thank you for telling me."
"Beth." He stopped, and began again. "If you come, I'll be at the back of the room. That's all."
