Chapter 11: The Studio

Rhonda told me not to go.

"Say nothing to her that you wouldn't say to a judge," she said.

"I won't."

"You will, but keep it short."

Ames Events had a glass storefront on Harbor Street with a white neon sign and a rack of sample gowns in the window.

At eleven that morning it was full.

A bride sat on a velvet couch with her mother, looking at a tablet.

Two assistants carried flower swatches.

Whitney stood in the middle of the room in a cream blazer, laughing at something the mother said.

She saw me through the glass.

Her laugh went on for one more second.

Marcy waited in the car, and I pushed open the door.

A bell rang.

"Beth," Whitney said brightly. "What a surprise. We're in a client meeting."

"I can wait."

"It might be a while."

"I have all day."

I sat in an empty armchair by the window, put my bag in my lap, and waited.

Nobody spoke.

The bride's mother kept glancing at my stomach.

After four minutes Whitney came over, smiling, and sat on the edge of the next chair.

She spoke low. "Is this really what you want to do?"

"Yes."

"Then say what you came to say."

"Not low," I said.

I stood up.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," I said to the room. "My name is Beth Kester. Last Friday this woman put on a wedding gown and married my husband in a chapel."

The bride lifted her head.

"It was a dare," Whitney said, to the room. "A very silly one."
