Chapter 10: Four Years of Needles

Cory sat down on the bottom stair.

"It was me," he said.

Marcy did not move.

I did not move.

"The doctor said so at the first visit. The count was almost nothing. She said the chance of this happening by itself was close to zero."

"The first visit," I said.

"Yes."

"Four years ago."

"Yes."

I heard my own voice from far off. "You walked out and told me it was fine on your side."

"I did."

"You said they wanted to start with me."

"Beth."

"Every month."

I had a hand pressed to my mouth, and I took it away.

"I gave myself shots in the bathroom," I said. "You counted for me. I lay on a table while a doctor searched for what was wrong with me, and I cried on the drive home because I thought it was my fault."

"It wasn't your fault."

"I said I was sorry to you. Every month, for four years, I said it."

"I told you not to."

"You let me!"

My voice rang off the mailboxes.

Upstairs a door opened and shut.

"You watched me thank you for staying," I said. "You let me think you were a saint."

"I didn't want to lose you."

"So you let me bleed instead."

He flinched.

"I was afraid. If you knew it was me, you'd..." He could not finish it.
