Chapter 9: 99.99 Percent

Beth's POV

The result came to Rhonda first, at nine fifty that night.

She forwarded it to me with one line: [Read the last page.]

I was sitting cross-legged on my aunt's couch with a bowl of dry cereal.

Marcy was on the other end of it with her feet on my knees.

I opened the file.

It was five pages of lab language.

The last page had a box around one line.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I read it once.

Then I put the bowl down and read it again, slower.

"Beth?" Marcy said.

I turned my phone so she could see.

She read it, and her mouth fell open.

Then she grabbed both my hands and yelled so loudly that the neighbor knocked on the wall.

"It's his!" she shouted. "It's his, it's his, it's his!"

"I know."

"You said it was his and it is his. You were right."

"I know it was his."

I was laughing, and I was crying, and Marcy had her arms around my neck.

For four years I had waited for a line like that in a doctor's office with Cory holding my purse.

I had it now, in my aunt's apartment, on a night when I wanted nothing from him.

"I'm going to send that to every single person in that group chat," Marcy said.
