Chapter 18: Both True

Magnus drove us back to the yard with one hand on the wheel and the other flat on his thigh.

Shelby's pink phone sat in my coat pocket, and I felt it against my hip the whole way.

Neither of us said anything until the gate.

Moby met the truck at the fence, and I let him lick my hand while Magnus locked up.

Since Thursday he had slept on the couch and I had slept in his bed.

We had been very polite about it.

Tonight I climbed the stairs ahead of him and did not turn toward the bedroom.

I stopped in the middle of the kitchen.

"You said you'd tell me something," he said from the door. "When we weren't in front of his store."

"Come in and shut it."

He shut it.

I took out the pink phone and the folded note and set them on the table between us.

He read it twice.

"She took everything back at that table," I said. "Then she handed me this at the door. She'll be at the gala, and Trevor reads her phone."

"Then we keep this one in the drawer," he said, "and we don't believe her yet."

"We don't disbelieve her either. Greta read the letter, and that part is true whatever Shelby says."

He nodded and pushed the note back toward me.

"You thought I would go with him," I said.

His jaw moved.

"He was offering the one thing you came to me for. The loan, free and clear, and an apology to go with it."

"I know what he offered."

"Everyone goes back, Linnea."

"I don't." I crossed the kitchen and stood in front of him. "I'm not going back to him. Not for a loan, and not because a man says sorry with his hand on his chest."

"You were angry at me."

"I'm still angry at you." I took hold of the front of his shirt. "I'm angry and I'm here. Both of those are true, and neither one cancels the other."

He looked down at my hand.

"Say you believe me," I said.

"I believe you."

"Say it like you mean it."

"I believe you," Magnus said, rough. "God help me. I believe every word."
