Ethan turned the phone around so I could read it.
Paired exchange. Donor entered for recipient N. Lane. Workup complete. Crossmatch with Ohio recipient: negative.
Under that, one name.
Nathaniel Ashworth.
I read it twice.
Then I took the phone out of Ethan's hand and called the coordinator.
The donor was at a hospital on the West Side, she said, signing his final consent. Right now. Room 1104.
"Don't let him sign," I said.
"Dr. Lane, he's an adult. It's his kidney."
"I know whose kidney it is."
Room 1104 was a small office with a round table, a box of tissues and a poster about organ donation with a sunrise on it.
Nathaniel sat at the table in his gray suit.
A transplant coordinator sat across from him with a folder.
Between them lay a form and a pen.
He looked up when the door opened.
His face did a lot of things at once.
"You weren't supposed to know until it was done," he said.
"Ma'am, you can't be in here," the coordinator said.
"I'm the recipient."
"Then you especially can't be in here. This is the donor's meeting."
