Chapter 6: Wake Up, Mom

I hit the parking lot.

Abel was sitting in his truck with both hands over his face.

I stood through the hood, because I had to.

"I couldn't hold on," I said. "It pulled me out. Abel, he signed. I saw him sign."

"I know," he said into his palms. "I'm sorry. I heard it, too."

A hearse pulled in two spaces over, far too fast.

Hattie got out with her handbag over one arm and walked straight to his window.

"They're taking the tube out at seven tomorrow morning," she said. "The nurse at the desk is a cousin of the girl who does my hair."

"Grandma, they threw me off the floor."

"The floor, dear. Not the building."

She pointed up at a glass walkway that joined the parking garage to the third floor.

"I've been delivering flowers to that wing since 1981," she said. "The skybridge ends at the waiting room. It's public. Your wife's bed is, what, twenty steps from the glass?"

"She's not my wife."

"She's very much stuck to you, though."

I would have laughed if I'd had the strength.

We went up in the garage elevator, the three of us.

Abel stood at the very end of the skybridge with his forehead almost touching the glass door.

On the other side lay a waiting room, a nurses' desk, and a long hallway, and I counted.

Eighteen steps to bed six.

"Go," Abel said quietly. "I'll hold still. I'm not going anywhere."
