Chapter 15: The Tunnel
We started at dawn.
Twelve of us went seven miles down the rails: me, Rhoda, and ten more who could still swing a pick.
We camped at the face, by the cart, with one lantern.
The rest kept the fire and the gate, and fed us, and kept the ferals talking to the walls instead of to us.
The rockfall was a wall of broken stone from floor to ceiling.
The first time I touched it, the silver in it bit my palm.
I swung the pick anyway.
Human hands. Human backs.
By the end of the first day I had blisters on my blisters.
By the end of the third day they'd broken.
The woman with the burned hands wrapped mine in strips of an old shirt without a word.
"Now you know," she said.
It was the most she'd ever said to me.
We worked in shifts around the clock.
Two on the picks, two hauling rock back up the rails in a rusted ore cart the twins had found and named Ansel.
"Push Ansel," one would say.
"Ansel won't move. Ansel's too heavy."
"Ansel's full of rocks."
They said it every single time, and every single time somebody laughed.
The fiddler sat on an upturned bucket and played while we dug.
He had three strings and about forty songs, and he'd made up most of them in the caves.
