Chapter 16: The Alpha's Gate

Greyfen's gate was shut, and the Alpha stood on the wall above it with his arms crossed.

We reached the valley at dusk, fifty-eight footsore wolves coming down the south road through the beech woods.

I had lived in this valley for fourteen years.

I knew every roof, and every roof had its door barred.

Smoke rose from the chimneys.

Nobody came out to look at us.

"Alpha!" I called up.

"Marlis Morcant." He had a carrying voice, and he used it like a man who had practiced. "You are declared deserter and sorcerer by Lord Marshal Skell. Greyfen gives you no shelter."

"Where's my father?" I called.

"Taken for questioning. He won't be harmed."

"By whom?"

"By the Crown." He lifted his chin. "The Marshal promised Greyfen no levy for twenty years. I've done what's right for the pack."

I felt the Ninth stir behind me.

Brigid let out a long, slow breath through her nose, and I put my hand on her arm.

"Not yet, Sergeant," I said.

"I'll only break one finger."

"Not yet."

I walked up to the foot of the gate, alone, and looked up at him.
