Chapter 19: Greyfen Musters
The pack hall held two hundred and had never been so full, and nobody was sitting down.
Greyfen's farmers stood along the walls with their arms folded.
The Ninth took the benches by the hearth, and Garreth stood at the head table with a charcoal stick and a plank of pine.
"Here is the meadow," he said, and drew a long oval. "Here is the Stone. Here is the south road. They come down it in column."
"How many?" asked the baker.
"Two thousand."
Someone swore softly.
"We have fifty-eight of the Ninth and about eighty who can fight from the valley," said Garreth. "Against the Host's front rank, that is a minute."
"Then why stay?" the miller's daughter demanded. "Take the children up the hills."
"He would hunt us down," I said.
Every head turned.
I stood up from the bench by the door with my mother's hammer in my belt, and I felt every eye on me.
"He'll burn the valley and put the pack in cages," I said. "And then he'll come for the next Keeper's daughter and the next. I'm not running. If anybody wants to take the children into the hills, I won't stop them."
