Chapter 19: The Old Phone
I went into the conservation lab alone, because the guard said Colby had asked for me and nobody else.
Nathaniel was ten minutes behind me in traffic.
I almost waited for him.
Then I thought of my bench, and my brushes, and a man sitting in my chair, and I went in.
Colby sat at my workstation under the lamp, with his coat off and his sleeves rolled.
The pale scar showed on his left forearm.
He had a phone in front of him on the bench, plugged into my charger.
"Em," he said. "I let myself in."
"That's my badge."
"I took it off your desk in the spring. I don't know why. I thought I might need to know where you were."
My skin went cold.
"Get out of my lab."
"In a minute." He picked up one of my scalpels and turned it in the light. "Sit down."
"Put that down."
"I'm not going to hurt you. I'm not going to hurt anyone." He laughed, high and cracked. "I can't even keep a girlfriend."
He set the scalpel on the bench and pushed it away with one finger.
He had not slept in days, and the charm was gone from his face.
"They'll put me away," he said. "You know that. Dad will let them."
"Your father will fight for you."
"Dad will fight for his company. I'm the cost of keeping it." He swallowed. "He told me last night. He said, if it comes to the car, you'll say you were a boy and I made you do it. As if I'd been twelve."
His voice cracked off the high ceiling, and he lowered it again.
