Chapter 13: Fee Returned
I docked Loose Change on Anvil's ring three without saying a word to the man in the second seat.
The clamps took hold with a clunk I felt in my back teeth.
Through the viewport, a Concord dock crew in grey stood waiting along the pier, and none of them looked at us.
"Captain," Biscuit said quietly, "the balance of the fee is due on arrival."
"One hundred and fifty thousand," I said.
"Yes."
"Void it."
"Captain, that is a hundred and fifty thousand credits."
"I know what it is."
Havrik had not moved.
"Inez," he said. "The money was never the..."
"Don't tell me what it was."
I said it to the glass.
"What about the first two hundred and fifty?" I asked my ship.
"Spent, Captain. It cleared your lien on Tallow."
"Then it's a debt."
I got my slate out of my jacket and put it on the console.
"Write a note to the Orrun relief fund for two hundred and fifty thousand," I said. "I pay it out of every haul I fly until it's gone."
