Raisa's POV
I woke at seven to Gio in a plastic chair and a lawyer's envelope on my blanket.
The monitor was gone.
A nurse had left a paper cup of ice chips, and the window showed the first snow coming down on the parking lot.
Gio sat with his elbows on his knees and his eyes on my face.
He looked as if he had not moved all night.
"Baby?" I said.
"Fine," he said.
"The heartbeat is strong.
"The doctor will tell you herself."
I shut my eyes and breathed.
When I opened them, he was holding out the envelope.
"My father's lawyer brought it at five," he said.
"I haven't opened it."
"Why not?"
"It's about you," he said.
"I didn't think I should read it before you."
I sat up and slit the envelope with my thumb.
The pages inside were thick and cream-colored and written in the plain hard language of lawyers.
I read all of it, and then I read the last page again to be sure.
"Say it back to me," Gio said.
"Your father makes you head of the family on his birthday," I said.
"The seat, the yard, the books.
"On the condition that I'm not at that table on Saturday.
"That I'm gone from the house and from you."
"Yes," Gio said.
"And if I'm there, it all goes to Lorenzo."
"Yes," he said again, and his jaw tightened.
I folded the pages along their creases.
"He tried to drug me, and he tried to buy me, and now he's trying to rent you," I said.
"He knows exactly what you'd give up.
