Chapter 11: The Glass of Water, Again

"What about the water?" I asked.

Emmett lay on his back in the hay with one arm under his head and looked at the rafters.

"I leave it," he said. "Every Friday. I told you Gil did, and I lied."

I propped myself up on one elbow.

"Why would you lie about a glass of water?"

"Because the glass is the whole thing." He drew a breath. "Diana, we knew you were listening."

I went completely still.

"Not on Friday," he said. "Before Friday. Since July."

"That's not possible."

"The first week you were home, your dad moved the whiskey nights from the porch into the den. He said the house was too quiet, and the noise might keep you company."

"I remember."

"He didn't think about who was on the other side of that wall. We did." Emmett turned his head. "Your mattress creaks, Diana. Every time we said something, it creaked. And every time it creaked, we dropped our voices and waited."

My face went hot.

"Boone worked it out first," he said. "He said, she's up. She's lying there, listening to four men argue about ballgames. He didn't like it, and then he did."

"Did what?"

"He said, what if we said it to the wall? The things nobody was brave enough to say to your face."

I sat all the way up.

My hair was full of hay, and the cold air was prickling my bare skin.

"You said it for me," I said. "All of it. Dex bending me over a bar."
