Chapter 12: Rule Two

I made Boone tell Dex that same morning.

I did not stay to watch.

I went to work and cleaned teeth for eight hours.

Every patient asked if I was feeling okay.

I kept smiling at nothing and then not smiling at all.

At five-thirty I stopped at the Giant Eagle for milk and onions.

I was standing in produce, holding an onion in each hand, when someone came up fast behind me.

"Diana."

It was Dex.

He had not shaved, and his shirt was buttoned wrong.

"Boone told me," he said.

"I know. I told him to."

"Four months." He kept his voice down, but it shook. "Four months those two let me stand in that den and talk to a wall. I'm the idiot who said it to your face, and I didn't even know you were there."

"Dex."

"I'm not mad about the plan." He took a step closer. "I'm mad that I was the only one who didn't get to be in on it."

"I'm sorry."

"I don't want you sorry."

"What do you want?"

"This," said Dex.

He took my face in both hands and kissed me in the middle of the produce aisle.

It was a good kiss.

It was warm and certain, and for one full second I forgot the onions.

Then I remembered myself, and I put an onion against his chest and pushed.
