Chapter 13: Grady Tells
I called my father from the Giant Eagle parking lot.
He answered on the first ring.
"Di."
"Dad, I can explain."
"Not on the phone." His voice was flat and very quiet. "Come to the house."
"Dad."
"Now."
He hung up.
Dex had followed me out with the cart still full of my groceries.
"I'll drive behind you," he said.
"No."
"Diana."
"If you pull into that driveway behind me, he finds out in the worst way." I took the milk out of the cart. "Let me go in alone."
He didn't like it.
He let me go anyway, and I think that cost him something.
There were two cars in my father's driveway.
One was Dad's truck.
The other was a silver sedan with a rental sticker on the bumper.
My stomach dropped.
Grady was sitting at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee in front of him, completely at home.
My father stood by the stove with his arms folded and his reading glasses pushed up into his hair.
He looked older than he had that morning.
"Hello, Diana," Grady said.
"What are you doing in my father's kitchen?"
"He called me, actually." Grady smiled at Dad. "Gil, I think I should tell her what I told you."
"Go ahead," said my father, and he did not look at me.
Grady turned his mug a quarter turn on the table.
"I've been worried about you for weeks," he said. "I drove out here twice last week to check on you. Boone Bledsoe's truck is in this driveway every night. Dex Muldoon's truck was here at two in the morning on Tuesday."
