Chapter 17: Band-Aid

I went up to my square by the ice machine with my coffee, because it was the only place I could think.

Nick came up the stairs a minute later and stood on the square with me.

We waited for the machine to rumble.

When the ice crashed down, I took the napkin out of my bra and held it low between us.

He read it, and his jaw went tight under his beard.

"One," he said.

"I think so," I said. "I can't prove it to a judge with half a sentence."

"You need the head."

"I need the head."

The ice stopped, and we waited for it to start again.

I looked down at the coffee in my hands and thought about the rule.

Every player's whole head under the water.

There was one man in this house who never took off his cap.

"He made that rule for me," I said when the ice came again. "He wants me looking."

"Then look," Nick said. "And then we'll get you home."

He said it was already decided.

I looked up at him.

"Last night you held my hand," I said. "Two nights ago you said not guilty wasn't forgiven."
