Chapter 11: The Second Phone

I did not burst through the bathroom door.

I tracked people for a living, and the first rule is that you never show them you've seen.

I went back down the corridor on the balls of my feet, sat at the card table and took out my phone.

"Come back," I typed to Tadhg, who was standing guard on the street. "Bring him. Quietly."

Then I waited for the bathroom door to open.

Donal came out yawning, rubbed his face, said, "Where's the guy?" and lay down on the couch with the blanket over his head.

He was asleep again in a minute.

I waited ten more.

Then I opened the gym bag.

It was a good bag, black canvas, and the lining on the bottom had been cut and glued back together with a strip of tape.

I peeled the tape up with my thumbnail.

A cheap prepaid phone lay between the layers.

I knew the passcode before I touched it.

Our mother's birthday, four digits, the same code he's used for everything since he was fourteen.

The screen woke.
