Chapter 13: Walking Out
Mal moved before the door finished breaking.
He put me behind him with one arm, drew the gun from his waistband and said, "Tadhg, the stairhead."
"Aye."
"Donal, down on the floor."
My brother dropped behind the couch with his hands over his head.
The funeral home stairs ran steep and narrow, with a turn halfway up and a brass rail worn dull by a hundred years of pallbearers.
Tadhg stood on the top landing with his shoulders filling it, and the first man came round the turn.
Tadhg hit him once.
The man folded and went backward into the one behind him, and both of them went down the stairs in a heap with a crash.
"Next," said Tadhg, calmly.
I looked around the kitchen for something to use.
There was a folding steel cart propped against the wall by the back door, the long kind with wheels and a canvas strap.
It was what the funeral home used to carry people out.
I took it by the handles, ran it to the stairhead and shoved it down the flight with everything I had.
It rattled and bounced off the rail and took a man in the knees.
