Chapter 14: The Boy in the Trunk

I sat in the hearse across from the Hall garage until the streetlights came on.

Nobody notices a hearse.

They look at it for a second, cross themselves and look away.

I learned that men on the pavement of Bunker Hill Street will walk three feet from a grieving woman in black and never see her face.

The shutter rose twice.

A car went in, a car came out, and the Buick did not leave.

At midnight somebody tapped on the back window.

I had my hand on the door lock before I saw it was Mal.

He had come on foot with his collar up.

Tadhg stood behind him with the thermos.

"I'm not here to stop you," Mal said through the glass.

"Then what are you here for?"

"To be used."

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I pressed the button, and the rear door of the hearse swung up on its hinges.

"Tadhg," said Mal. "Walk the block."

"Aye."

"Take your time."

Tadhg took his tea and went off down the street without a word.

Mal climbed into the back of the hearse and pulled the door down after him.

It was a long dark space with a low roof and a bed of steel rollers, smelling of lilies and wax.

I climbed over the seat to meet him.
