Chapter 15: The Man Who Cannot Speak
Mal stopped at the foot of the bed.
He stood there with his hands open at his sides, and I saw him try to say something and fail.
The old man's eyes moved.
They went from the door to his son's face and stayed there, wet and grey and exactly the color of Mal's.
A woman in pale blue scrubs rose from a chair in the corner with a paperback clutched to her chest.
She was the hospice nurse from St. Brendan's.
I knew her by her lanyard.
"Please," she said. "Please don't shout. He gets agitated."
"Who moved him?" said Mal.
"Mr. Padraig. Last night, with two men, in a van."
"Is he in pain?"
"No." She wet her lips. "He's been sedated every night since the crash. Mr. Padraig gave the instruction. A dose at ten o'clock in the drip, to keep him calm."
"Calm."
"I was told he'd never wake."
