Chapter 16: The Count

Mal's POV

My uncle came down the stairs with his arms open, as he had come down every staircase of my childhood.

Behind him, twenty men fanned along the cellar wall with their coats open and their hands near their belts.

Tadhg stepped in front of Roisin.

I stepped in front of my father's bed.

"Malachy," said Padraig tenderly. "You've found him. Thank God."

"Don't."

"I moved him for his own safety. You're a young man and a headstrong one, and I feared what the girl might do. I've kept him safe and comfortable since the accident."

"Comfortable," I said.

"Under the care of a good nurse."

The nurse made a small sound behind me.

Padraig did not look at her.

He looked at my father, and the smile on his face was, God help me, loving.

My father looked back at him.

I had not seen my father's face in eleven months with anything on it, and the thing on it now was not fear.

It was recognition.

The old man's good hand lifted off the blanket and pointed one thick finger straight at his brother's chest.

The cellar went still.

Somebody in the crew shifted, and a belt buckle clinked.

"He's confused," said Padraig gently.

"He's pointing at you."
