Chapter 22: After

Kit woke on the third day to grey light and the smell of charcoal.

His hip was wrapped in clean linen, and the black lines were gone from his skin.

Dorrie sat in a chair at the foot of the bed, knitting something grey and shapeless.

"You're awake," she said, without looking up.

"How long?"

"Two nights. The spring and the thistle did it, and the king, who did not leave."

Kit turned his head.

Ewan was asleep in the chair on the other side of the bed with his arms crossed and his chin on his chest.

He had a bandage round one forearm and three days of beard.

His hand lay across Kit's wrist and had not moved.

"He's not eaten," Dorrie said. "Make him."

"I'll try."

"You'll do better than I did." She put the knitting down.

"The council meets at noon. He says you're to be carried down if you can't walk."

"I can walk."

"I told him that."

They did not carry him.

Kit walked into the great hall at noon with a stick and Ewan's hand under his elbow.

He wore a clean shirt, and the bond-mark showed red on the back of his neck.

Every wolf in the Rockies was in the room.
