Chapter 7: The Open Door
His office was on the third floor of Rathbone Hall, at the end of the long corridor, with a window over the channel.
On Monday at ten past four I knocked on the open door.
"Come in," Elias said.
He was behind a desk covered with maps of the Narrows, and a lamp was on, though it was still light outside.
He had the sleeves of his gray sweater pushed up and his glasses pushed into his hair.
I had not seen him in glasses before.
I stopped in the doorway with my folder, and forgot what I had come to say.
"Close the door," I said, before I could stop myself.
"No."
"Then I'll say it in the doorway."
I came in and set the form down on his desk.
It was a pink drop slip, with the course number across the top, and my name written on the line at the bottom.
I'd signed it in the registrar's office five minutes earlier.
"I'm dropping Tidal Systems 301, section two," I said.
"Your section.
"I've enrolled in the independent study with the other instructor, same credit, same scholarship, and I got the dean's secretary to initial it."
