Chapter 29: The Cab of the Truck
He was still there in the morning.
I looked out the spare-room window at six, and the white truck sat at the foot of the drive with frost on its windshield.
He had not come up to the house.
He had not knocked, or honked, or called.
"Is that him?" Fern said at breakfast, without turning from the stove.
"Yes."
"All night?" Fern said.
"All night."
"Hm." Fern flipped an egg. "My wife told me to go out and ask him in."
"Did you?"
"I'm not a fool. He didn't want to be asked."
The truck sat there all day.
Around noon the postman had to go around it, and he waved, and Ansel lifted a hand from the wheel.
At dusk the headlights stayed off.
I stood at the kitchen window with my arms folded and I watched the shape of him, perfectly still, a man with his hat on the dash.
"He's not going to move," I said.
"No."
"He's going to sit there until I go out."
"No," Fern's wife said, drying a plate. "He's going to sit there until you don't need him to."
I stared at her.
"That's the difference," she said.
