Chapter 19: The Night Before

Wyatt's POV

I read the message aloud once more in the diner, and then I stopped trusting my own voice.

Ruby had gone very still next to me.

Laney said a word I won't repeat.

Dale said, "That's her. That's exactly how she writes it."

The detective picked up on the second ring.

I told him what was on my phone, and he said to forward it, and he said he'd be at the Rialto garage by Friday noon.

"We'll want her to walk down to level three at nine," he said. "We'll have two officers on the stairwell and a unit on the ramp. If the man comes to her, we take him with his hands full."

"She walks down alone."

"She walks down looking alone."

I looked at Ruby.

She had her chin up.

"I'll do it," she said.

"No," I said.

"Yes."

"Ruby."

"It's the only way he comes out." Her voice was quiet. "If I don't go, he waits for another night, and I don't know which."

I hate that I knew she was right.

I drove her home and walked her to her door.

The next evening she asked to spend the night before the garage at my place instead of hers.

"Your place," she said. "Please."

It was Thursday, and a cold rain was starting.

I made a pot of soup from a can, and she ate half of it, and we sat on my couch with the lamp off and the window open an inch to let the rain smell in.

I thought about the message.

Tell Ruby you want to talk to her alone.

Don't come down until it's over.

Savannah had picked me for the job.

I turned it over from every side, and the thing that got to me was how well she'd chosen.
