Chapter 15: Hot Tub in the Snow

Hannah's POV

The snow fell into the hot tub and vanished before it touched the water.

I sat between Nathan and Colin on the cedar bench with the steam rising around our heads.

The dark lake lay quiet beyond the deck rail.

The cottage stood behind us with one lamp lit in the kitchen window.

It was the Saturday after Christmas, on the shore of Lake Huron outside Caseville.

The nearest neighbor was a mile of frozen road away.

Marcello and Claudia were not due until Sunday.

We had the place for one night, and none of us had said what the night was for.

"You're shivering," Nathan said.

"My shoulders are in the air."

"Come here."

He drew me back against his chest, and the hot water closed over my collarbones.

His beard was wet against my temple.

His round glasses had fogged white, so he had taken them off and set them on the rim.

Without them he looked younger, and slightly lost, and entirely mine.

Colin sat across from me with his huge arms stretched along the edge of the tub.

Snowflakes stuck in his hair and in the gray stubble on his jaw.

"Oh, yeah," he said, softly. "That's better."

"What is?"

"You, there. With him."

Nathan's hands came around my waist under the water.

"I have been informed," Nathan said into my ear, "that someone said yes to someone first."

"He told you."

"He told me on the porch, with a bottle of aquavit, at some length."

"It was short," said Colin.

"It was not short. I wrote it down."

I laughed, and Nathan's hand slid up my stomach to my breast and stopped there, warm and wet.

"I find that I like him," he said. "I did not expect to like him this much."

"I'm right here," said Colin, red to the ears.

"I know. That is why."

Colin slid across the bench through the steaming water.

He took my chin in his big hand and kissed me, deep and slow, and Nathan's mouth settled on my shoulder.

I tasted snow and aquavit and cedar smoke.

Nathan's fingers found my nipple and rolled it.

Colin's hand went under the water, down my belly, between my thighs.

I gasped into his mouth.

"Easy," Nathan murmured. "Let him find it. He's quick."
