Chapter 16: The Last Page
Marcello read the last page of my chapter aloud with his hand flat on my bare stomach.
His wife sat in the armchair at the foot of the bed.
"The keepers did not appear in the ledgers as labor," he read, in the voice that had lived in my margins. "They appeared as rent."
I lay on my back at the edge of the mattress in the upstairs bedroom of the cottage, naked.
My hips were at the edge, and my knees were falling open.
A woodstove ticked in the corner.
Snow ticked on the dormer glass.
Nathan and Colin had driven into Caseville for groceries and been told, kindly, by Claudia, to take their time.
"Go on," Claudia said.
She had pulled the armchair to the foot of the bed, close enough to touch.
She had a wool sock in her lap.
I did not yet know what was in it.
"The women who fed three hundred men a day on credit," Marcello read, "were paid in the only currency the company allowed them."
His hand moved down my belly.
"That currency was permission to stay."
His fingers brushed the top of my sex, and I drew a breath.
"Keep still," he said, and read the next sentence.
"They were not poor because the books were kept badly. They were poor because the books were kept well."
His fingers parted me and found me wet.
"Oh, Hannah," he said, in the reading voice. "Listen to this one. This is a good sentence."
"Marcello."
"Listen. It's yours."
He slid one finger into me while he read, slowly, and I felt every word in the soft inside of my body.
"I have been reading these pages for three years," he said. "I would like to read them all the way through."
He stood at the end of the bed, naked from the waist down, with my pages held in one hand.
He was already hard.
He took my left knee and lifted it over his arm, and then the right.
He drew my hips to the very edge.
"Claudia," he said, not looking away from me.
"Yes."
"Now."
Claudia opened the sock.
She took out a small matte-black thing the length of her hand.
She thumbed a switch, and it began to hum.
I stared at it.
