Chapter 17: Stairwell

The man in the camel coat was waiting for me on the third-floor landing on the first Monday of the spring term.

He stood with his thermos in one hand and an envelope in the other, and he did not say good morning.

I had come up the back stairs of the old brick building with a library book against my chest.

The stairwell smelled of radiators and floor wax.

It was empty at nine, and it was cold, and the light from the window on the landing fell across his smooth, closed face.

"Miss Eberhardt."

"Hannah."

"I have written to the dean," he said.

He held up the envelope and smiled a little.

"I wanted you to know before I delivered it. It seemed only civil."

"That's kind."

"It is a full account," he said. "Dates. A parking lot. An advisor and two colleagues."

He tilted his head.

"And a student of twenty-six who has been, how shall I put it, extremely forthcoming."

I stood very still, and I thought of the key in my pocket.

"The dean will read it by Friday," he said. "And then I imagine you will have a great deal of time to reconsider your choices."
