Chapter 18: On Her Knees, Not Hers

I tied Nathan's wrists to the carved wooden arm of the green sofa with his own gray scarf, and he let me.

"Tighter?" he asked, mildly.

"Don't talk."

"I only wanted to be of use."

"You will be," I said.

It was the third Thursday of January, and the lock was turned, and the key was in my fist.

Outside the office window the snow lay blue on State Street.

Inside, the green lamp made its pool of light on Marcello's desk, and the radiator ticked.

For the first time in the history of the room I was the only one dressed.

I wore my gray cardigan, buttoned wrong on purpose, and Marcello's reading glasses.

I had taken them off his desk when he was not looking.

They slid down my nose.

Nathan lay back along the length of the sofa, naked from the waist.

His arms were stretched over his head and his round glasses were folded in his shirt pocket.

He looked at me with great interest.

Marcello and Colin knelt side by side on the worn rug in front of the sofa.

I had told them to.

Both had their hands behind their backs, and both were hard, and neither had been allowed to touch me for the last half hour.

"Look at the two of you," I said.

I walked in front of them in my stockings, slowly.

"Two years Marcello decided everything."

"Yes," said Marcello.

"He decided when to speak. He decided when to look at me. He decided who knew."

"I did," Marcello said.

"Today I decide."

His breath went out of him in a shaking line.

"Yes, Hannah," he said.

I stopped in front of him and took his chin in my hand.

I turned his face up.

His brown eyes were wide and dark and entirely willing.

"Say it again."

"Hannah," Marcello said. "Please decide."

I had thought it would feel like power.

It felt like being trusted.

I let him go and unbuttoned the cardigan, correctly this time, and dropped it on the rug.

I wore nothing under it.

I heard Colin's breath, and Nathan's, and the sofa springs groan as Nathan's hips lifted and he remembered his wrists.

"Marcello," I said. "On your knees. You're already on your knees. Good. Come here."

He shuffled forward on the rug.
