Chapter 23: Green Velvet

Claudia sat down on the green velvet sofa in Marcello's office at midnight, put both hands flat on the cushions, and laughed until she cried.

"It sags," she said. "It sagged then too. I told the man at the estate sale it sagged, and he gave us ten dollars off."

I stood with my back against the locked door and the brass key in my hand.

The green lamp burned on the desk.

The radiator was off for the season, and the window stood open on the warm May dark, and I could smell lilacs from the quad.

Marcello leaned on the desk, still in his dinner jacket, watching his wife on the sofa with an expression I had no word for.

Nathan and Colin stood by the bookcase.

None of us said anything for a moment.

"I carried this up three flights with him," Claudia said. "The year we married."

She smoothed the velvet.

"I thought, we will have so much time to sit on it."

She looked up at me.

"I never did."

"Claudia," I said.

"Come here, Hannah. Sit with me."

I crossed the office.

I sat down on the sofa, and the springs gave under me in the same place.

She took my face in her hands, and she kissed me, slow and sure.

Then she took the zipper of my green dress at the nape of my neck and drew it down.

"Oh, I've wanted to do that all night," she said. "Stand up."

I stood.

She peeled the wool off my shoulders and let it fall, and unhooked my bra, and pulled my underwear down my legs.

I stood naked in front of her in the lamplight, and Claudia looked at me with her hands resting on my hips.

"Marcello," she said, without turning. "Undress me."

He crossed the room.

He knelt behind the sofa and found the buttons on her dinner dress, which was dark blue silk.

He undid them with trembling hands, one at a time, down her back.

She leaned forward and let it slide.

Beneath it she wore a slip, and she shrugged out of that, and sat back on the cushions bare to the waist.

"Now the rest," she said.

I knelt in front of her and drew off her shoes and stockings and her underwear.

She lay back on the sofa, naked, and spread her knees, and held out a hand.
