Holly couldn't see the gold letters.
I read them out to her, word for word.
She sat very still on the rug.
"Returned," she said. "Like a library book."
"It's the plot. It wants the book it was written as."
"The book it was written as has me crawling back to Chase." She pulled her knees up inside the crepe. "I read the summary when I took the job. Chapter forty, he forgives me for being inconvenient."
"He forgives you."
"Kneeling in the rain. Very moving."
"Well," I said. "The book's going to be disappointed."
The letters hung there all night.
In the morning they were gone, and I didn't trust it.
The first week of the marriage went like this.
Ellis took the old greenhouse at the bottom of the garden.
Nobody had used it since the founder died. He swept out four years of leaves.
North light. Glass on three sides.
He stood in the middle of it with a broom and didn't say anything for a long time.
Holly went to the tower every morning at seven.
