Chapter 21: Game Seven

Four seconds were left in game seven, and the score was two to two.

Nash had the puck on the half boards in his own building.

Eighteen thousand people were on their feet, and a Montreal defenseman hung off his back.

Across the ice, number 29 had his stick up in the lane and his eyes on Nash.

The man was alone, as he always was, a wall in white.

For four seconds neither of them looked at the clock.

Nash shook off the defenseman and cut inside.

He faked a pass so cleanly that the Montreal goalie bit on it by an inch.

That was all it took.

He fired it into the top corner, short and nasty, and the horn blew over the building.

The roar knocked him down.

He got up laughing, and found his gloves gone, and found Donnie on his back.

Then the handshake line formed on the ice.

Nash went down it with his helmet off, shaking hands.

Montreal's goalie, the tall winger, the kid they called up in March.

At the end of the line stood the captain.

Gaspard Lachapelle looked at Nash's hand for a count of one.

Then he took it, and he did not let go.

He held it in front of the cameras, in front of eighteen thousand people and a hundred million at home.

His scarred chin was up and his grey eyes were level.

"Wear it better than me," he said.

"I always did."
